What"s Surrogacy

Gestational surrogacy is the process whereby a woman – the gestational surrogate – consents to the embryo copy process, otherwise called an IVF Procedure. In this method, an embryo (or plural embryos) deriving from the couple acquiring the surrogacy service is implanted in the surrogate. If the procedure is successful, the surrogate becomes impregnated with the child of the couple (the intended parents). The level of participation with the surrogate thereafter is absolutely up to the intended parents – typically, the couple is associated with the initial IVF treatments, and being present at the moment of labor and birth of their child. They then take responsibility for the child post-delivery and make the long term change to legal parenthood.

What"s IVF

IVF is a process women choose opt for when they are experiencing problems with infertility. The conventional IVF involves the removal of the human oocytes from the ovaries and the fertilization process, accomplished by “letting" motile spermatozoa to fertilize the oocytes into a special culture medium. This means that once embryos are made, they are moved in to the uterine cavity through a process called Embryo Transfer. IVF is utilized to imitate the biological processes, in vivo.

IVF can be used for women who"ve blocked or harmed fallopian tubes, thus preventing the egg and sperm from meeting naturally. IVF may also help you as well as your spouse if your infertility is unexplained and/or the male spouse has a minimal sperm count. Other factors like mature age endometriosis, immunology, obesity and psychology may lead a couple to infertility. IVF could be the option for you if these factors come into play at this stressful time in your lives.

IVF Timeline

Step 1: Follicular Development and Monitoring

Throughout a woman"s normal menstrual period, LH and FSH will be the hormones that the body uses to induce development and maturation of a single oocyte. To be able to optimize your pregnancy rates during IVF, it is important to have more thatn one tmature oocyte available for fertilization, embryo development and transfer into the uterus. The ovaries are therefore stimulated using higher amounts of the stimulating hormone that naturally exist in your body. This is achieved using Gonadotrophin injections. Many different stimulation regimes exist at the moment, and the doctor chooses the main one suitable to your biological system, in order to achieve a good number of high quality oocytes. Close monitoring of the follicles (the sacs which contain the growing oocytes in the ovaries) is required and it is achieved with regular ultra-sound in order to ascertain their size and their numbers . At the correct timing, more hormones will be administered, aiding with the final maturation of the oocytes. Based on all the available feedback and laboratory results, the most suitable time for the restoration will be identified.

Step 2: Oocyte Recovery

This is the actual procedure by which the doctor collects the oocytes of the womain’s body, a procedure demanding anesthesia. A small needle enters the top part of the vagina, through the assistance of the ultrasound, into the ovary"s follicles. The liquid that is aspirated will then be studied in the laboratory, where the oocytes will be determined and moved into culture media inside an incubator at 37oC to continue the maturation process for a few more hours.

Step 3: Fertilization of OOCYTS

In this stage, your partner must give his test of sperm on the day of the oocyte restoration which will be preserved until needed). His sperm will be carefully made ready with a special method and the healthy spermatozoa separately. There are roughly 100,000 motile spermatozoa added per oocyte, with 4-6 hours after oocyte restoration. This is for the fertilization to take place within the next 12-18 hours in the incubator. The insemination process will lead to the fertilization of the oocytes, and ensuing embryos are transferred to different culture media to be viewed closely over the next 48 hours.

Step 4: Embryo Transfer

The best embryos are chosen and are moved through the neck of the womb using a little catheter on the basis of their rate of growth and morphology. The number of embryos that will be transferred is decided according to the age and health background of the potential mother; alongside the quantity and quality of the embryos which have now been released during each therapy cycle. For each couple, there is a possibility of experiencing more than one child. Embryo transfer is a pain-free method, much like having a cervical smear, and thankfully takes only a few minutes. After the job has been completed, we highly recommend a brief resting period in the recovery room. The day after, oocyte retrieval progesterone and other supplements will be prescribed to ensure that the lining of the uterus receives sufficient stimulation and sustains the implantation of the embryos. Quantitative pregnancy tests with blood must also be done 12-14 days after embryo transfer.
